A Tribute to Louis Armstrong
This "dandy" group is made up of musicians who have played Dixieland-style jazz all of their lives and who "sub" for all the local Dixieland bands.
"We consider ourselves a dandy bunch of subs," says leader Michael McClimon. The band consists of Dick Baum, clarinet and tenor saxophone; Michael McClimon, cornet and trumpet; George Isenhart, trombone; Jim Piehl, banjo; Baron Wolfe, bass; and Roger Brown, drums.
The Dixie Dandies will perform selections which are associated with the great jazz trumpeter, Louis Armstrong. In this evening's tribute to Armstrong, they will play tunes from the 1920s when Armstrong was in the King Oliver Band as well as numbers that were recorded as recently as 1960. Some of the selections to be included in tonight's performance will be: "Hello Dolly," "Mack the Knife," and "What a Wonderful World."
The band will also recount stories associated with Louis Armstrong and read excerpts from letters that he wrote to friends as he toured the world.
