January 14, 2006

Susie Laraine, a well-seasoned performer on tenor and soprano sax, flute and alto flute, has been in the area for more than three years playing in jazz groups at the Eureka Inn, Sapphire Rose, Morris Graves Museum and other venues. Shao Way Wu, bass, performs in many different musical styles and is well known around town for his high energy and exceptional talent. Matthew Dowd, piano, moved to Arcata just a few months ago from Florida and is a very accomplished pianist, especially knowledgeable in the jazz idiom.

Rhumboogie Saxophone Quartet - Fortuna Concert SeriesThese three musicians have combined to produce an unusual trio. They play mainstream jazz compositions while working together to give the music a fresh sound. Their own arrangements open up the trio format to new textures and variations in the traditional functions of the instruments.

The Rhumboogie Saxophone Quartet takes its name from a club in St. Louis where Miles Davis played when he was young. The group features musical styles from bebop to Bartok, the majority being jazz arrangements with a few originals as well.

The quartet consists of Julie Froblom on baritone saxophone, Susie Laraine on tenor and soprano, Diane Zulegar on alto, and Randy Carrico on alto and tenor. If you love the saxophone you will love this group!
